The biggest SEO change of the past five weeks was not a core update. It was Google’s August 2026 spam update (18 to 21 August), followed by AI Overviews auto-expanding into AI Mode answers, generative AI reports reaching every Search Console property on 31 August, and google.com/goto redirects on result links. No core update is confirmed as of 7 September 2026.
Key takeaways
- Google’s August 2026 spam update ran from 18 to 21 August (2 days, 16 hours), the third spam update this year, and case studies show programmatic and AI-padded sites lost the most.
- Trackers flagged unconfirmed volatility on 1 to 3, 5 to 6 and 12 to 13 August; Google has not announced a core update, whatever some agency blogs claim.
- Search Console’s generative AI performance reports reached all websites on 31 August 2026, with impressions but no clicks, plus an opt-out from AI surfaces.
- From 28 August, some AI Overviews expand into full AI Mode responses with no “Show more” button, pushing organic results further down.
- Google confirmed google.com/goto redirect links on 26 August, and from 30 August site reputation abuse manual actions no longer demote content for searchers in the EEA.
- Reddit’s share of ChatGPT search citations fell 86.4% in mid August, and organic sessions across 218 sites are down 23.6% since 2023, per a 25 August First Page Sage report.
The August 2026 spam update
18 to 21 August 2026 · Source: Search Engine Journal
What happened. Google started the update at 9:27 a.m. PDT on 18 August and completed it at 1:49 a.m. PDT on 21 August, per Search Engine Journal. No new spam policies came with it. Search Engine Land reported losses across 20 industries, harder than a typical spam update. Glenn Gabe’s case studies (31 August) show a programmatic health site losing rankings for over 200,000 queries, a thin Amazon affiliate site with AI padding losing 14,000 queries outright, and a 1.5 million URL site with light human editing caught too.
Why it matters. The pattern is scaled content abuse: volume with nobody checking. What to do. If traffic fell on or after 18 August, this is suspect one. Would anyone build the losing pages by hand? If not, prune rather than rewrite. Recovery takes months. Our SEO guide for 2026 covers the policy in detail.
Unconfirmed volatility, and no core update
1 to 13 August 2026 · Source: Search Engine Roundtable
What happened. Semrush Sensor, Mozcast and others flagged elevated volatility from 1 August, on 5 and 6 August and again on 12 and 13 August, per Barry Schwartz’s September webmaster report and Search Engine Watch. Google’s status dashboard logged nothing. Several agency blogs now describe an “August 2026 core update”. There was none. Discover was reshuffling at the same time: one publisher’s Discover clicks fell from about 10 million a month to under 1 million, per Newor Media citing Raptive data.
Why it matters. A site hit on 5 August and again on 19 August has two separate problems, and a Search Console logging error depressed reported impressions from 13 to 17 August as well. What to do. Annotate analytics with the dates below before diagnosing anything, and compare rankings, not just sessions.
| Date (2026) | Event | Confirmed by Google? | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3, 5 to 6, 12 to 13 August | Three volatility waves | No | Ranking swings |
| 13 to 17 August | Search Console logging error | Yes (data anomalies page) | Impressions under-reported, later restored |
| 18 to 21 August | August 2026 spam update | Yes (Search Status Dashboard) | Real losses for scaled content |
| 26 August | google.com/goto redirects confirmed | Yes (statement to Search Engine Land) | Rank tracking cost, referrer noise |
| 28 August onward | AI Overviews auto-expand into AI Mode | Yes (spokesperson) | Lower organic CTR on affected queries |
| 30 August | Site reputation abuse not enforced in EEA | Yes (Search Central blog) | Rankings differ by searcher location |
| 31 August | Generative AI reports on every property | Yes (Google blog) | AI impressions visible, no clicks |
Search Console AI reports go global
31 August 2026 · Source: Google
What happened. Generative AI performance reports, first tested with UK sites on 3 June, reached every property on 31 August 2026, per Google’s updated announcement and Search Engine Journal. The Search report shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date. Clicks are not included. A property-level control opts you out of AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI features in Discover; Google says it is not a ranking signal elsewhere. A logging error under-counted AI impressions from 13 to 17 August, later restored; John Mueller called it “just a logging issue”.
Why it matters. You can finally see which pages surface in AI answers without third-party tools. But an impressions-only report is half a report. The opt-out removes you from surfaces Google says have 2.5 billion monthly users (AI Overviews) and over 1 billion (AI Mode). What to do. Export the report now as a baseline, then cross it with GA4 landing pages using the method in our marketing analytics guide.
AI Overviews expand into AI Mode on their own
28 August 2026 · Source: Search Engine Roundtable
What happened. Chris Long spotted, and Google confirmed on 28 August, that some AI Overviews now expand automatically into a full AI Mode response with the “Ask anything” box open and no “Show more” button, per Search Engine Roundtable. Organic results drop well below the fold on those queries.
“For some queries, AI Overviews may dynamically expand for topics where our systems determine it’s most useful for people.” Google spokesperson, 28 August 2026.
Why it matters. This is the one change worth acting on first. AI Overviews already showed on 43% of queries (Similarweb) to 48% (Semrush) as of 30 July 2026. Auto-expansion turns a summary with links into a chat, on queries Google picks. What to do. Check your top 50 informational queries for expansion. There, a citation inside the answer beats ranking third; the tactics in our AI in digital marketing guide apply.
Generative UI reaches AI Overviews
19 August 2026 · Source: Search Engine Journal
What happened. On 19 August Google said generative UI, which builds interactive visuals, tables and calculators inside an answer, was live globally in English in AI Mode and rolling into AI Overviews, framed as back-to-school tools, per Search Engine Journal and Google’s August roundup. Practice quizzes now generate directly in Search.
Why it matters. Google now builds the mortgage calculator and the pH chart itself, so tool pages with no proprietary data face the answer box head on. What to do. Audit tool pages you rely on for links. Add what Google cannot generate: your data, a saved result, a next step. See tool-led link building in our content marketing guide.
Google confirms goto redirect links
26 August 2026 · Source: Search Engine Land
What happened. Google confirmed to Search Engine Land on 26 August that result links are wrapped as google.com/goto?url= plus an encoded destination. The endpoint returns a 302 and blocks HEAD requests. Google called it a technical measure against abuse; the timing, weeks after its lawsuit against SerpApi was dismissed, is hard to ignore. Decodo puts the extra cost at 500 to 1,000 requests per five-page ranking report and dates the first sighting to 23 June.
Why it matters. Rank tracking gets slower and dearer, and referrer data could shift if the redirect changes what analytics sees. What to do. Compare GA4 Google organic with Search Console clicks for late August. If they diverge, ask your rank tracking vendor how they resolve goto links.
Site reputation abuse paused in the EEA
28 August 2026, effective 30 August · Source: Google Search Central
What happened. Google’s Search Central blog said that from 30 August 2026, manual actions under the site reputation abuse policy no longer affect rankings for searchers in the European Economic Area, after “discussions with the European Commission”, which opened Digital Markets Act proceedings on 13 November 2025. Instead the affected section “may be separated in our systems so that, over time, it ranks independently from the rest of the site”, per Search Engine Journal. Existing EEA actions are lifted. Outside the EEA nothing changes.
Why it matters. The same coupon subfolder can rank in Germany and be demoted in India. That complicates global rank tracking and revives a parasite SEO playbook, for European traffic at least. What to do. Read the compliance section of our affiliate marketing guide before treating this as a green light; Google says it still stands by the policy.
Reddit loses ground in ChatGPT
4 and 14 August 2026 · Source: Search Engine Roundtable, Promptwatch
What happened. On 4 August Google’s Jennifer Kutz told The Verge that “Reddit gets no special preference in Google’s ranking system”, reported by Search Engine Roundtable and PPC Land, days after Reddit’s stock fell 12.49% on Q2 results describing search referrals as choppy. On 14 August, Reddit’s share of ChatGPT search citations fell from a 3.83% average (18 July to 7 August) to 0.52% (14 to 17 August), an 86.4% drop, per Promptwatch, which also shows Reddit down 30.5% in AI Mode. Promptwatch shows when, not why; practitioners point to a Reddit robots.txt change around 14 August.
Why it matters. Two years of “add Reddit to your strategy” rested on Reddit being everywhere. One platform decision removed it from ChatGPT overnight. What to do. Check which assistants still cite threads you seeded, and diversify. More in our AI marketing news for September 2026.
The Preferred Sources button
20 August 2026 · Source: PPC Land
What happened. On 20 August Google released an embeddable Preferred Sources button for publishers’ own pages. A reader clicks, the site is added, and they return to the page. Google said over 600,000 unique sources have been selected, up from 345,000 on 27 May, per PPC Land and Search Engine Journal. Preferred sources get more visibility in Top Stories, AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Why it matters. It is the closest thing to a subscribe button inside Search, and it favours publishers people already know. What to do. Place it near the byline on high-return-visitor templates and watch Top Stories impressions for four weeks. Publisher context is in our content and publishing news.
Bing retires legacy Webmaster APIs
31 August 2026 · Source: Search Engine Roundtable
What happened. Microsoft retired the Bing Webmaster Tools SOAP and POX/HTTP APIs on 31 August 2026, announced 3 August, with the REST/JSON API as replacement, per Search Engine Roundtable. Keys and quotas carry over. Why it matters. The interface is unaffected; old URL-submission scripts break silently, and Bing feeds Copilot and ChatGPT results. What to do. Grep your deploy pipeline for the legacy endpoint and switch this week. No other ranking-relevant Bing, Perplexity or OpenAI change was confirmed in this window.
Two studies worth reading
20 and 25 August 2026 · Source: Press Ranger and OtterlyAI, First Page Sage
What happened. Press Ranger and OtterlyAI analysed 129.3 million citations across 20 million URLs from June 2026 against 91 AI licensing deals, published 20 August: publishers with an OpenAI deal earned 48% more citations per page on ChatGPT (10.2 versus 6.9), and niche outlets earned 213% more than mainstream media in 15 of 16 industries. First Page Sage’s 25 August report covered 218 sites and 3.4 billion sessions from January 2023 to July 2026: organic sessions fell 23.6%, media 47.3%, local services 6.8%, while AI platforms grew from 0.1% to 6.2% of sessions, ahead of social.
Why it matters. Citations follow contracts as well as quality, and the damage is uneven; our local SEO guide explains why map pack queries are shielded. What to do. Benchmark your AI referral share against 6.2%; B2B SaaS sites in the same report average 11.8%.
What to do this month
Three things, in order. Separate the spam update from the volatility and the logging bug using the table above; most “we got hit” emails this month describe two events. Then pull the new Search Console AI report and find the queries where an AI Overview now expands into AI Mode. Then fix the boring stuff: goto links in your rank tracker, the Bing REST migration, and a Preferred Sources button if you publish news.
